What the test can tell you
A water meter test can show whether water continues moving through the metered system when known fixtures and appliances are off. It cannot identify the exact location, distinguish every irrigation setup, or replace professional diagnosis. Think of it as an early screening step.
Before you begin
Confirm that nobody will use water during the test. Turn off faucets and water-using appliances, pause automatic irrigation if you know how, and avoid shutting valves that are damaged or unfamiliar. If water is actively damaging the property, prioritize a safe shutoff and professional help.
A simple process
Photograph or write down the meter reading and note any small leak-indicator movement. Wait 15 to 30 minutes without using water, then compare the reading. Continued movement may indicate consumption somewhere in the system, including toilets, appliances, irrigation, or concealed piping.
What to check next
Listen for running toilets, inspect appliance connections, check visible hose bibs, and consider recent irrigation changes. If the meter continues moving and the cause remains unclear, share the readings and timing with the independent provider you contact.
